Special Olympics ‘Make it Shine’

May 3, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

Twenty-five Special Olympic athletes, 14 volunteers and numerous parents and chaperones collected trash and debris from City Park, North Buckhannon Riverfront Park and Jawbone Park recently as part of "Make It Shine" month.

The athletes and volunteers were divided into three groups, with the two smaller groups assigned to pick up trash and debris from the two city parks.

In total, 11 bags of trash and debris were collected April 22 from the three parks. Three of the bags contained nothing but cigarette butts.

Special Olympic athletes, volunteers and family members collect trash as part of a project for ‘Make It Shine’ month recently in Buckhannon.

Anyone who was at the parks that evening or over the next few days could definitely see the difference made by the athletes and volunteers.

Afterward, a pizza party in their honor was held at Stockert Youth Center to show them appreciation for all of their hard work.

The group wanted to thank Susan O'Dell, who helped organize the event; Domino's Pizza, which provided discounted pizzas; and Stockert Youth Center, which allowed the group to use the cafeteria after the cleanup efforts.
