Elite field to compete in meet

Some of the state's elite athletes will be on display during the Big 10 Conference track and field championships.

The meet is slated to get underway at 12:15 p.m. at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

The B-U girls and Bridgeport boys are the frontrunners for the overall team titles.

The Buckhannon-Upshur girls will look to win a title in today’s Big 10 Conference track and field championships in Tennerton.

Emily Godwin and Lauren Cvechko lead the Bucs into the competition. Godwin, who has signed with North Carolina, is the top-rated performer in Class AAA, according to run.wv.com's power rankings.

Cvechko has signed to run at Wesleyan.

B-U's Mackenzie Leigh and Mercedes Dowell are the top shot put and discus throwers in the state.

Bridgeport, North Marion and East Fairmont are expected to challenge B-U in the team race.

Fairmont Senior and Grafton are other teams to watch on the boys side.

Sprinter Nathan Bernarde and distance runner Abe Merinar lead Grafton and Bridgeport, respectively.

After today's conference championships, regional competition will take place next week, starting on Wednesday.

The state meet is scheduled for May 17-18 at Charleston's Laidley Field.
