BECKLEY - Randy Tallhamer knocked in five runs as Fairmont State eliminated Davis &?Elkins from the West Virginia Conference tourney with a 10-3 win on Thursday.
"We really shot ourselves in the foot today," Senator coach Ronnie Palmer said. "We didn't take advantage of the 13 hits we had and our mistakes on defense led to runs for them.
"But that's baseball. We'll learn from our mistakes and start getting ready for next season."
The Falcons led 3-0 before scoring three times in the fifth to break the game open. Two of the runs scored with two outs.
"That inning really hurt us," Palmer said. "We had a chance to get out of it allowing just the one run but an error kept things going for them."
The Senators scored their initial run in the bottom of the frame when Brad Banzhoff singled and later scored on Matt Moceri's one-bagger.
The Falcons made it 8-1 in the sixth and tacked on two more runs in the eighth.
Moceri added an RBI single and Treavor Dubiel an RBI groundout in the seventh for D&E.
Moceri and Anthony Ragos each had three hits to pace the Senators, while Dubiel collected two hits.
Phil Longnecker chipped in with three hits for the Falcons.
Kyle Crist (4-5) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five.
Nick Opferman (6-0) earned the win. He gave up just three runs despite allowing 13 hits.
D&E ends the season with a 26-20 record.
