A great door is opened unto me

May 11, 2013
By Pastor Stephen W. Pyle Elkins Church of God of Prophecy

The title of this offering is from I Corinthians 12:9 (KJV). "For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries." This first epistle to the church at Corinth was written from Paul the apostle, who tells us he "would tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost" and there were "many adversaries."

For those who preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, ther are many adversaries. The chief adversary is Satan, whom Peter describes as a "roaring lion seeking whom he may devour."

Satan's influence is tightening the anti-Christ noose around the neck of our unbelieving, present-day world, including the United States of America.

At this time in God's program and plan for mankind, the name of Jesus is under assault and is being taken from prayers, public gatherings and our national Godly heritage. At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess "He is Lord."

John tells us that "the word (Jesus, the living Son of God) was made flesh and dwelt among us." "He came unto His own (Israel) and His own received Him not." His name is above all, and He is ever interceding to the Heavenly Father Jehovah God for his blood-bought saints.

The U.S. was founded as one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

We have lived under the same form of government for 237 years.

Since our beginning, France has completely changed its government form seven times and Italy 51 times.

The bullet-proof president, George Washington, was raised up by Almighty Jehovah God, his Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, to guide this nation into a greatness not seen since God raised up Abraham, the patriarch of the great nation Israel.

Washington wrote his family about God's protection after a battle in the French and Indian War, when several rounds of ammunition were fired at him at point-blank range, and bullet holes were in his jacket without any touching him.

He explained, "By the all powerful dispensation of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation." Several references were made by Washington during his first inaugural address giving homage to Almighty God, such as: "Since we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained."

In Washington's farewell address, he reminded this nation, "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars."

John Adams is quoted, "The general principle on which the fathers achieve independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that these general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God."

John Jay, the first chief justice and one of three men most responsible for our U.S. Constitution, reminds us, "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers and, it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation, to select and prefer Christians for their rulers."

Thomas Jefferson is quoted, "The precepts of philosophy laid hold of actions only, but Jesus pushed his scrutiny into the heart of man.

"He erected his tribunal in the region of his thoughts and he purified the waters of the fountainhead."

At the Constitutional Convention on July 28, 1787, Benjamin Franklin reminded those present, "We need God to be our friend and ally, we need to keep God's concurring aid. If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We've been assured in the sacred writing that 'Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.'"

From the Bible, we see the model for our three Branches of government in Isaiah 33:22, "For the Lord is our judge (judicial branch, Supreme Court); the Lord is our lawgiver (legislative branch of Congress) and the Lord is our king (executive branch, the president); he will save us."

My late Christian grandmother, a native of East Prussia the Baltic Sea area who eventually became a U.S. citizen, traced her linage to the Romanoff (Romanov) family dynasty of Russia, 1613-1917. Some fled the revolution and changed their name to Roman. Reportedly, Anastasia Romanoff surfaced after her family was murdered. She carried a vivid memory and bullet scars in her body. Many believed she had survived. She died in Charlottesville, Va., in the mid-1980s without completely proving her story.

Imagine the youthful Jesus Christ at 12 years old talking to the elders, and they ask him, "Little boy, how old are you?" Jesus would have replied, "On my mother's side I'm 12 years old, but on my father's side I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. I am that I am."

The name of Jesus is being silenced throughout our nation. John's first Epistle declares, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father, (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also."

- In loving memory of my grandmother, Magdalene Eury, April 1884 - February 1970.
