Once WESTTEST week is completed on Thursday, area high school teams will once again return to the field for a busy finish to the spring season.
Baseball sectionals and softball regional action will get back underway on Thursday. After being postponed four times due to the weather and field conditions, Elkins and Buckhannon-Upshur look to finish their Class AAA, Region II softball semifinal on Thursday.
The Bucs hold a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning of the game, which is scheduled to be played at Elkins Middle School.
The winner will host 19-8 Jefferson, which defeated Musselman in its half of the region.
Moorefield, meanwhile, will entertain South Harrison at 6 p.m. in the Class A, Region II finale. The Yellow Jackets (24-3) advanced with a 24-0 victory over Pendleton County.
Petersburg also will be in regional final play on Thursday. The Vikings travel to Robert C. Byrd in the Class AA, Region 2 finale.
Baseball semifinal and regional play will be held on May 20-23. Buckhannon-Upshur, Philip Barbour, Pendleton County and Petersburg are all still alive.
Tucker County and Tygarts Valley, meanwhile, are still playing their sectional title game. The Bulldogs, who need just one win to advance, have a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. The contest will resume Thursday in Mill Creek.
In regional semifinal action, B-U will visit Hampshire on May 20, Philip Barbour hosts Bridgeport on May 21, Pendleton County entertains East Hardy or Moorefield on May 21, Petersburg travels to Frankfort on May 21 and Tucker County or Tygarts Valley visits Notre Dame on May 21.
The finals will be held May 22-23.
The state track meet also will begin Friday at Charleston Laidley Field.
The B-U girls are one of the favorites in the Class AAA meet after capturing the regional title.
Other area schools sending athletes include Elkins, Philip Barbour, Tygarts Valley, Tucker County, Lewis County, Moorefield, Pendleton County, East Hardy, Pocahontas County and Petersburg.
