Rose Frye has taken advantage of her retirement to pursue a few of her many interests. She and her late husband were part of the original volunteer group that took on the restoration projects at Adaland Mansion. Since restoring windows and floors, Frye has become familiar to Adaland visitors through her culinary talents in the kitchen.
Frye is going to share with the public another lifelong interest which she inherited from her mother. From 11 a.m. until noon Saturday, she will conduct a traditional patchwork quilting workshop at the Philippi Public Library as part of the library's Meet Your Local Artist series.
All her quilts are made entirely by hand; no machine stitching is used. Frye doesn't sell her quilts, but she gives them as gifts to family and friends. Everyone is invited to come and learn how quilts were made before the invention of the sewing machine, and the quilt's patches and scarps of fabric were pieces of discarded clothing, adding family history to the quilt.
