Clifford Long

Clifford Porter Long, 85, a resident of Mill Creek, passed away at 9:55 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, at his residence.

He was born March 28, 1928, at Adolph, a son of the late Marion Ferd Long and Martha Lloyd Long.

On July 31, 1974, in Maryland, he was married to the former Louise Pearl Tenney, who survives.

Also surviving are one brother, Robert P. Long and wife, Jo, of Warren, Ohio; a son-in-law, Ken Elbon of East Dailey; and five grandchildren, Pamela Bennett and husband, Derrick, of Whitmer, Timothy Elbon of Valley Bend, Lisa Elbon Skinner and husband, J.V., of Fredericksburg, Va., Karen Wandling and husband, Chuck, of Mechanicsville, Va., and Kimberly Bissett and husband, Rodney, of Fredericksburg, Va. Ten great-grandchildren, Chelsie and Tori Elbon, Kenna, Catlyn and Becca Bennett, Trevor Lyttle, Emily and Alison Wandling and Autumn and Cole Bissett, also survive.

Preceding him in death were one daughter, Linda Elbon; two brothers, Owen and Dick Long; and two sisters, Marjorie Currence and Thelma Stokes.

Mr. Long was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received three Bronze Service Stars for his service in Korea. After his retirement from the military, he was employed at Huttonsville Correctional Center, where he worked for many years as a corrections officer until his retirement.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bonnie Starkey officiating. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery near Huttonsville where full military honors will be accorded by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities or RMHC, 841 Country Club Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505, in memory of Mr. Long.
