Dr. Charles Eugene "Gene" Boyer, 70, a resident of Elkins, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013.
He was born April 15, 1943, at Winston Salem, N.C., a son of the late John Thomas and Agatha Inez Batchelor Boyer.
Surviving are one daughter, Laura Louise Mowry of Gibsonville, N.C.; one brother, Robert L. Greenwood of Mustang, Okla.; two sisters, Nancy Carol Ledbetter of Longview, Texas, and Margaret Rose Pollard of Lesterville, Mo. Two grandchildren, Caitlyn Noel Mowry and Megan Elise Mowry, also survive.
Dr. Boyer obtained an undergraduate degree in zoology from University of Maryland and a PhD from Duke University. He worked for Burroughs-Wellcome Pharmaceuticals and later taught science in the North Carolina community college system, before retiring to Elkins in 2010. He had a long association with the Augusta Heritage Center. He was a bass player with the Elm Street Alley Cats band and a member of the board of directors of the Randolph County Community Arts Center.
Dr. Boyer's remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, May 31, with the time and location to be announced.
