Raising awareness of pancreatic cancer

June 15, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

As a volunteer for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, I'm writing this letter to ask for your help and the help of your readers in letting our members of Congress know the importance of protecting funding for the National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI).

In 2013, an estimated 45,220 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States and 38,460 will die from the disease. This number includes 1,197 people in the state of West Virginia.

When symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is often late stage, and 74 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of their diagnosis while 94 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years. My brother, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2007, was one of the "lucky ones," if you can say that, because he actually made it 18 months after his diagnosis. This followed months of numerous misdiagnoses.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is sponsoring a "National Call-In Day" on Tuesday. Our message to Congress is this:

Protect National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding, and save the medical research that saves lives, including a host of numerous other diseases.

Listed here are the Washington D.C. phone numbers of our West Virginia Representatives:

Sen. Joe Manchin, III 202-224-3954

Sen. John D. Rockefeller, IV 202-224-6472

Congressman David B. McKinley 202-225-4172

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito 202-225-2711

Congressman Nick J. Rahall, II 202-225-3452

Please join me and thousands of other advocates by calling our elected representatives on Tuesday. You could be helping save the lives of countless Americans for generations!
