Chili Cook-off has new recipe

June 19, 2013
By Melissa Toothman - Staff Writer , The Inter-Mountain

The 16th annual Smokin' on the Tygart Chili Cook-off in Philippi on Saturday boasts some changes in its recipe of events this year.

Instead of the traditional poker run, the Philippi Main Street-sponsored events will include a car and motorcycle cruise-in. Cars and motorcycles can be registered for $5 for the cruise-in and may receive awards such as "best of show" or "farthest traveled." Also new this year is free karaoke from noon to 4 p.m. All activities will take place near the Barbour County Courthouse.

"We wanted to do something different and just switch it up a little," Philippi Main Street's Tammy Stemple said. "We want people to come, park and just sit and listen to music, have a bit of fun."

The cruise-in also will allow motorists to be present for the chili tasting, cook's parade and other events. About 20 cooks participated in the Chili Cook-off last year, Stemple said. So far, 17 have registered for this year's event, and registrations are being accepted through Thursday.

Chili cooks may win various awards for their recipes. Each year, guests have tasted samples of the various styles of chili and have voted for their favorites. Stemple said the chili tasting at 3:15 p.m. and the judging at 4:30 p.m. are exciting parts of the day.

"It's a very good and laid-back day, and people have a good time," Stemple said. "We're hoping that we get several cars and motorcycles that come and just hang out."

Other prize-winning opportunities are offered by the corn hole tournament. The winner will receive half of the money collected from the entry fees.

There will be a silent auction, a dime pitch and many vendors offering anything from face painting and hot sauces to jewelry and homemade rugs.

Cooks and vendors are still being accepted. To register or to learn more, call 304-457-3700, ext. 226.
