Fireworks and more set for Fourth

Residents have many choices of events to enjoy this Fourth of July holiday weekend, from fireworks to concerts to community rallies.

Barbour County

The Barbour County Chamber of Commerce, the Barbour County Fair Association and the Barbour County Commission will again provide a complimentary fireworks display during the Independence Day weekend.

Fireworks will start promptly at 10 p.m. Friday at the Barbour County fairgrounds on Route 250 between Belington and Philippi. Gates will open at 7 p.m.

A free-will offering will be accepted at the gate for those who can help with the cost of the event. There is no charge for parking. Contributions also may be sent to the Barbour County Chamber of Commerce, 101 College Hill Drive, Box 2124, Philippi 26416.

Tucker County

Canaan Valley Resort State Park has a full day of holiday activities on Thursday. From 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. a "Kite Making and Flying" program will be offered at the Nature Center, followed at 10 a.m. by a Bald Knob hike located the Bear Paw Ski Area. Wagon rides and marshmallow roasting activities will be offered beginning at 6 p.m., with registration at the Beech Club.

On Friday, Uncle Sam's Birthday Party, a long-standing tradition in Canaan Valley Resort, will be held. Proceeds from the elimination-style dinner support annual Tucker County Foundation grant and scholarship awards and Uncle Sam's Unrestricted Fund. On Saturday and Sunday, Canaan Valley Resort will offer Windfest. The Wings over Washington Kite Club will conduct kite building workshops for all ages. Along with the workshops, club members will demonstrate stunt flying, and fill the sky with their jumbo kites. For more information go to canaanresort.com.

On Saturday, the Tucker County Alpine Festival will present Celebration of the Arts, and will offer a free afternoon concert featuring the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at Canaan Valley Resort Tube Park area. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets. The concert begins at 3 p.m., and gates will open at 1 p.m. Food and beverages will be offered at this event.

Saturday evening offers a fireworks display presented by the Thomas Volunteer Fire Department. Donations are appreciated. Firework activities begin at dark, around 9-9:30 p.m.

Upshur County

There are no public events planned for the Fourth of July in Upshur County. The West Virginia Strawberry Festival has opted for the second straight year not to stage a fireworks display, citing financial reasons. Officials canceled last year's display shortly after the June 29 storms wiped out power to many in the county.

Pocahontas County

Snowshoe Mountain is offering the Homegrown Arts & Music Festival, a celebration of the music, arts and culture of Appalachia and West Virginia, Friday through Sunday.

Those attending can experience the traditions of yesterday and enjoy the talent of today with a variety of vendors and bands. The event will feature musical entertainment from David Buhrman, Shane Meade and the Sound, The Chris Lane Band, Jordan Covington, The Carpenter Ants, The Boatmen, Fletcher's Grove, The Hackensaw Boys, Jason Hall and Bo McMillion.

On Saturday, Snowshoe Mountain will offer Community Appreciation Day. Residents from Pocahontas, Randolph or Webster counties can receive a free scenic lift ride, admission to Split Rock Pool and more activities and savings.

Lewis County

Stonewall Resort will offer the McFly Outdoors Summer Concert Series on Saturday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with country music by Rustic Highway and the folk country sounds of James Archer.

A fireworks show will take place at approximately 9:30 p.m. over Stonewall Jackson Lake. Some of the best views of the fireworks show can be found on the pedestrian boardwalk, which can be accessed a short walk from the Roanoke Activity Plaza.

There is a $5 per car admission fee to enter Stonewall Resort State Park on Saturday. Once inside the park grounds, there is no cost to attend the concert or fireworks.

Randolph County

The Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce will present the 29th Mountain State Street Machine Car Show this Fourth of July weekend, as well as a fireworks display set for 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Also, the West Virginia Patriots will present a God and Country Rally Thursday at noon at the Elkins City Park Main Pavilion.

The event will feature the Baptist Bible College Singing Patriots, patriotic music and speeches, drama reenactments and games and prizes for the children. Free watermelon, face painting and a dunk tank will be offered for everyone to enjoy.

The event will be offered rain or shine. Those attending may bring canned goods or paper products for the Rock Ministries Food Pantry.
