Fundraiser to benefit toddler with leukemia

July 3, 2013

A fundraiser to benefit 3-year-old Olivia Alexander, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Seneca Rocks.

The event will take place at Yokum's Campground, which is owned by Alexander's father. A hot dog sale, silent auction and bake sale staarts the day, and live music will start at 6 p.m. All proceeds go toward Alexander's hospital bills and other costs associated with her care.

Olivia Alexander and her parents, John and Jacklyn Alexander, are from Martinsburg. Olivia Alexander has been receiving treatment at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where she was finally released on June 29.

"We're doing OK, just trying to make the best of a bad situation right now," Jacklyn Alexander said.

Olivia was hospitalized one day before her diagnosis on June 7.

"We'll find out on July 8 if she is in remission, and (if) the chemo is working," Jacklyn Alexander said. "We'll go to the next step if she is. We're hoping she will be. They haven't told us what the next step is. They told us they didn't want to tell us until we got to that point."

The family keeps an active Facebook page called Team Olivia, which provides updates on her progress. Those interested in the benefit may call to register for a hotel room at 1-800-772-8342 or make horseback riding reservations at 304-567-2466.
