Shop locally during First Fridays event

July 3, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

Come downtown on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. to enjoy live artistic demonstrations, create unique keepsakes and gifts, browse the work of local artists, and spend time with your neighbors. Local businesses including Artists at Work, Elkins Sewing Center and the Randolph County Community Arts Center will keep their doors open late and encourage you to come and enjoy historic, downtown Elkins.

First Fridays are being held in cities across the country and they offer a chance for communities to enjoy and support the arts, as well as local businesses.

"There are many reasons to shop locally, including the important fact that when you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community," said ON TRAC Liaison Karen Carper.

First Fridays take place the first Friday of every month and are centered around Davis Avenue and Third Street. Local businesses are working toward a renaissance where the downtown streets are filled with people enjoying what the town has to offer.

"We would love to grow the event so that it becomes a street party which allows visitors to peruse local shops, buy from local artisans, enjoy live music out on the street, and stop at one of the many restaurants downtown," said Cindy Sandeno, one of the organizers of the event.
