The Elkins All-Stars made their debut in the Babe Ruth 15-year-old state tournament Saturday evening at Robin Harvey Memorial Field with a 12-2 decision over Beckley in six innings.
Elkins' Caleb Riggleman gave up a single to Beckley's Logan Smith to start the game. Kenny Maiolo then reached first on a fielder's choice and later scored on an RBI single by Dillon Foster.
The first run for Elkins was manufactured as Cole Harlan benefited from an error to reach first base, stole second and advanced to third on another throwing error. He then scored on a passed ball.
Then the floodgates opened as three batters drew walks from Beckley's Shane Sexton. He paid for that as Ryan Hoffman hit an RBI single, a three RBI double from Riggleman, and an RBI triple from Jared Kerns.
Maiolo relieved Sexton after that and gave up an RBI single to Daniel Crawford before striking out Cole Harlan to end the stanza with Elkins on top 7-1.
The defense tightened up for both teams in the second and third innings.
Beckley put another run on the board in the fourth when Foster hit his second single of the evening and later scored.
Elkins answered back with two runs in the home half of the inning. Crawford led off with a single followed by Joseph Severino and P.J. Lanham both hitting RBI singles.
Beckley's bats were thwarted in the fifth and sixth innings as Crawford and a good defensive effort shut them down.
The home team entered the bottom of the sixth inning holding a 9-2 advantage. Kerns went up to bat first and reached first on an error. A single by Crawford followed and both were driven in on a double by Harlan.
Two batters after that Lanham stepped to the plate and belted an RBI single to bring in the final run. The game ended at 12-2 on the 10-run mercy rule.
Caleb Riggleman pitched a complete game and gave up the two runs and only four hits.
