Elkins pool plans progress

July 26, 2013

Community members convened again this week to discuss the logistics of building a public pool in Elkins.

The meeting-which took place at the Elkins City Park pavilion Wednesday evening - marks the second time area residents and government officials have come together to discuss plans for the construction of a water attraction.

"We are really enthusiastic about this project," said Logan Smith of the Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission, who attended both this week's meeting and the first, which took place July 10 in Glen Dale Park. "There are lots of people who have such a strong interest and are bringing lots of ideas to the table."

This time, the group set up three working committees to help organize the effort, including a design committee devoted to working on land and design issues that may crop up in the development process; a fundraising and budget committee that will handle the funding and finances of the project; and a promotions committee that will deal with communication and public support for the project.

Each committee is planning to meet at least once every month, and the entire group will come together to serve as a steering committee for the overall project.

Smith said that, as part of the research and development of the pool project, committee members are planning on visiting similar sites in the region such as the facilities in Upshur and Lewis Counties and in Moundsville.

"We also want to encourage people in the community who have an interest in the project to talk to not only the group and their committees, but also politicians and government officials to help spread the word and gain support," Smith added.

The project has already garnered the support of local government officials such as Elkins Mayor Van Broughton and Del. Denise Campbell, D-Randolph.

The next meeting for the group will take place at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Elkins City Park Pavilion.

The public is invited to join the group on Facebook, which is listed as "Community Support for a Public Splash Pad/Pool in Elkins WV."
