When God is particularly grieved by man's actions he pronounces a "woe" on them. This word speaks of extreme grief; in other words God is not very pleased with what he is seeing! I can remember my mom or dad's reaction when I did something to grieve or anger them; I would hear "Ralph Michael House." I knew things were about to turn really bad for me. By the same token, when we hear our Heavenly Father pronouncing a "woe" on someone it cannot be good for this person.
This is the terminology God uses in Matthew 18: 1-14 in speaking to anyone who would hinder a child from getting saved; " woe to the man by whom the offence cometh (v. 7)." In fact, he says that it would be better for a person to hang a rock around his neck and to be thrown in the depths of the sea to drown rather than to hinder a child from coming to Christ for salvation. With this said, do you not think that God has pronounced a "woe" on many parents, pastors, educators, judges and government officials? Just think for a few moments of how often decisions have been made, actions have been taken and policies have been enacted that have hindered the salvation of our children by any one of these I mentioned. I say with God, woe unto these who are offending our children today!
Woe unto the parents who are too lazy or too busy to take their children to church! Woe to the educator who demands that God not be mentioned in the classroom! Woe to the judge that rules against our children praying in school or speaking the name of Jesus at school activities! Woe to the Boy Scouts and others that will bow to the demands of sinners rather than guard the safety of our children! Woe to the County Commission that does not have enough backbone to pray in the name of Jesus (Matthew 10: 33)! Woe to all that will "offend" a child while they are still in the womb by ending their life! "Woe to the man by whom the offence cometh!"
"Woe unto the world because of offenses (Matthew 18: 7)." Our Founding Fathers understood this warning. Throughout the documents of the founding of this nation the Bible is quoted more often than any other source for political commentary. The prayer of the Constitutional Convention in 1774 would be declared unconstitutional by many judges and lawmakers today, as they offered this prayer "in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ thy Son and our Savior, Amen."
Mom, dad and pastors - do not get caught up in the political correctness of our day and time, God admonishes us; "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful (Psalm1: 1)." It is not the will of the Father that a single child should perish or be lost to the wickedness of this world because the parents would not live and teach them the word of God (Matthew 18: 14)."
Actions speak louder than words. How true this is with our children; you cannot fool your children with mere words! When Israel fell under the conviction of God's word during the rule of King Hezekiah they took action (II Chronicles 31). They utterly destroyed the images, altars and places of worship of the false gods. When those of the early church fell under the conviction of God's word, they burned their books of witchcraft, horoscopes and sorceries (Acts 19: 18-20). When the Apostle John spoke of the children of a dear friend of his he stated, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth (III John 1: 4)." Mom and dad, can you say this of your children? Woe to those that offend one of these little ones!
