Metheny excelled in 3 sports at Elkins High

Editor's note: The following is the third in a series of profiles of individuals and teams that will be inducted into the Randolph County Athletic Hall of Fame Aug. 10 at Gandy Dancer Theatre.

Chelsea Elizabeth Metheny lettered in cross country, basketball and track for four years at Elkins High School. She qualified to participate in 11 state meets and tournaments.

Her cross country team of 2000 was the Class AAA state runner-up. The team captured the state championship in 2001. In 2001 and 2003, she received All-NCAC and All-Region cross country honors.

Chelsea Metheny was a standout in cross country, basketball and track during her career at Elkins High School. She became the first female from a Randolph County high school to graduate from a United States military academy.

For three years, she was captain of the Lady Tigers basketball team. In 2001, the team won the sectional title.

In 2002, 2003 and 2004, the teams captured sectional and regional titles and advanced to the state basketball tournament. She was named to the All-NCAC basketball team in her senior season.

On the track, Metheny finished eighth at the Hershey National Track Meet in the 800-meter run in 1995. In 1997, she won the AAU Region IV 1,500-meter race, qualifying to run in the AAU national meet. She was high point scorer in the first Irwin Invitational meet at EHS in 2001.

As a sophomore, she won the Ken Cunningham 5K Memorial Run and qualified for the state meet in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter events.

She again qualified in the 1,600 and 3,200-meters as a junior. As a senior in 2004, she competed at the state meet in the 3,200 meter and 4x800-meter relay events, placing third in the 4x800 relay to earn All-State status.

Based on her athletic achievements and leadership ability, Metheny became the first female from a Randolph County high school to graduate from a United States military academy.

She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy where she participated on the cross country and track teams.
