Randolph County Senior Center announces 2014 trips

The Randolph County Senior Center has three trips planned for 2014. Rebecca Poe, trip coordinator, lists the following trips:

The showcase trip for 2014 will be the Normandy and Paris, trip planned for June 27, 2014. A 10-day trip, it comes on the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy. Here's how the travel agency describes the trip: "Visit Omaha Beach. Today this hallowed ground is a site for rest, relaxation and remembrance. But 70 years ago, in June 1944, this beach was the center of a war where bombs and bullets laced the sand.

"The D-Day landings were the largest military operation in history and the beaches of Normandy bore the brunt of the invasion. It was Omaha that witnessed the most vicious fighting of World War II. Early dawn that chilly June morning, almost 7,000 boats hit the beaches and tens of thousands of soldiers from Canada, United States, the U.K. and elsewhere began pouring onto the shores. While little physical evidence remains of this battle today, its impact on the lives of so many, and the history of our world, will be forever remembered."

Cost for the trip for two people is $4,199. Single costs and an itinerary will be available soon.

The Senior Center is also sponsoring a winter get away to Aruba from March 19-March 24, 2014. This will be an all-inclusive trip. All costs are covered and you have a room on the beach. Nine restaurants and seven lounges are available. Like a cruise, there is nightly entertainment. You can go and be busy, or go and just enjoy the beach and laze around. The price is $2,014 for double occupancy and $2,262 for single occupancy.

The center will also do a land cruise to Alaska with Princess Cruise Sept. 13-24, 2014. Here's the trip in a nutshell: Fly to Anchorage, bus to Mount McKinley Wilderness Lodge and then travel on to Denali where we will visit Denali National Park.

Then we travel by Princess Train (the one with the glass top) to Whittier, where we get our ship. Our cruise takes us to Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park (both while cruising, no stops), then to Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan where we will have stops. The last stop is Vancouver, British Columbia, where we fly home. This is a 12-day 11-night cruise tour. Cost depends on the category of cabin you want on the ship and whether you are traveling alone or with a partner. This trip is nearly full. If interested contact Rebecca Poe very soon.

There are lots of places to go and things to do with the Senior Center! Call Rebecca at the center on Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 304-636-4747 or at home at 304-823-3760.
