Golf cart theft leads to arrest

August 13, 2013
By John Wickline - Upshur Bureau Chief , The Inter-Mountain

An Adrian man, who admitted to state troopers that "a sober man" probably would have realized an abandoned golf cart he said he found along the Sago Road was stolen, is being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a felony charge of transferring/receiving stolen property.

Robert Lee Linger, 21, of 2 Adrian Apartments, is being held at the jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond after being arrested last week.

According to a complaint filed in Upshur County Magistrate Court, Linger said he discovered a 2008 Yamaha golf cart on the Sago Road and found the key inside the cart.

He reportedly drove the golf cart back to his residence before trading it for a Porsche scooter to an Adrian resident. That man in turn traded the golf cart to another person in Adrian for a tractor and cash, according to the complaint.

The State Police recovered the golf cart on Aug. 5 in Adrian.

The golf cart, valued at $4,500, had been reported stolen from the Buckhannon Country Club on Aug. 3.
