Richard Lee "Pappy" Harlan, 67, a lifelong resident of the Jimtown community passed from this life Thursday Aug. 15, 2013, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born May 26, 1946, at Jimtown, a son of the late George and Lucy Miller Harlan. Surviving is his beloved wife of 47 years, Teresa "Terry" Rowan Harlan.

Two daughters, Michelle Phillips and husband, Richie, and Angela Isenhart and husband, Henry (Brian), all of Elkins. One son, Richard (Richie) Lee Harlan II preceded him in death on Oct. 24, 2003, from a coal mining accident. Also surviving are four granddaughters, Racheal Smith, Cadie Phillips, Courtney Isenhart and Carrie Isenhart and two grandsons, Joshua Isenhart and Jonathan Phillips, all of Elkins, two great-grandchildren, Dreyton and Isabella Boggs of Elkins, 12 brothers and sisters, William and Dorothy Harlan of Adolph, Carolyn Elmore, of Jimtown, Mary Ann and Ed Hodgkiss, of Sunset Beach, N.C., Kenny and Doretta Harlan, of Jimtown, Midge and Roger Thompson, of Elkins, Dale and Anna Harlan, of Jimtown, Bert and Mary Harlan, of Junior, Linda Biller of Kerens, Brenda and Dennis Currence, of Tallmansville, Jim and Sandy Harlan, of Jimtown, Barbara and Michael Sams, of Parkersburg, Patti and Larry Hodgkiss of Woodbine, Md., a brother-in-law David and Debbie Rowan, of Jimtown, and sistersin-law Judy and Neal Blake, of Junior, and Debbie and Jerry Moyer, of Elkins. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death were his father and mother-in-law, Garnet and Violet Rowan, and brothers-in-law, Carl Elmore and Doug Biller.

Richard was a union coalminer for 38 years retiring from Bethlehem Steel. He enjoyed spending time with his family which he adored and his many friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

He attended Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church in Jimtown. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Monday, Aug. 19, he will be moved to the Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church at Jimtown for visitation from noon-1 p.m. the funeral hour. The Rev. Jim Murphy will officiate and interment will follow in the Phillips Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o John Phillips, Treasurer, 919 Buckhannon Pike, Coalton, WV 26257 in memory of Mr. Harlan.
