The Coalton Volunteer Fire Department is having their first Gun Bash on Saturday at the new armory off Corridor H, near Harding. This event is an attempt to raise funds to purchase personal protective equipment for the department's firefighters. Tickets are on sale for the event for $30 for one ticket and $25 for additional tickets.
The event will take place between noon and 6 p.m., with a gun drawing every 15 minutes. Food and drinks are included in the ticket price.
The department's current self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) will be outdated by NFPA standards within the next few years. These SCBAs allow firefighters to breathe fresh air while inside a burning structure for a limited period of time. A preliminary estimate for replacing this SCBA is nearly $90,000.
Area volunteer firefighters struggle to keep equipment up to code while trying to balance budgets that barely cover operating costs. A major purchase of this type cannot be accomplished without fundraisers or grant funding. Even though the department has successfully applied for grant funding for other needed equipment, funding for this project has not been secured.
It is imperative that the SCBA be replaced for the safety of the volunteers, so the department is attempting to raise extra funds by having events that include the community to help support the project. The community the volunteer fire department serves is needed to support the members and help raise the funds needed to keep the department in operation.
Tickets are still available for the event and can be purchased from any department member or by calling 304-678-6416 or 304-704-7349. A list of the prizes can be found on the Coalton Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page.
