Arts Center seeks community input for Smithsonian exhibit

September 16, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

On Thursday at 7 p.m., the Randolph County Community Arts Center is holding a town hall-style meeting to solicit community involvement, input and ideas for our next Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit, "Hometown Teams."

This exhibit is part of the Smithsonian's Museum On Main Street program. These exhibits travel the country, and visit only 90 communities each year. For 2014, the Randolph County Community Arts Center has been selected as one of only six stops in West Virginia for the "Hometown Teams" exhibit. The exhibit will arrive in Elkins on June 29, 2014, and run through Aug. 21, 2014.

This exhibit celebrates how sports define us as Americans, the culture, the games (football, baseball, soccer, basketball, hockey, etc.), the rituals, literature and the economic and social impacts of sports. The exhibit embraces more than just the sports and players themselves, but also looks at cheerleading, the bands, musicians, supporters and everyone involved in sporting events.

Next Thursday evening, the RCCAC will hold its first meeting for our entire region to learn about the exhibit, and to assist our Planning Committee in developing the local portions of the exhibit and connecting with the community. We encourage local sports leagues/conference officials, coaches, referees, athletes, boosters, teachers, historians, churches, band members past and present, music stores, really anyone who has had an experience with local sports in any capacity.

We are also looking for local memorabilia to display, such as photos, trophies, sporting equipment, band instruments or other items relating to sports.

We are hoping for a strong turnout, since it is very important to us to have the community involved as much as possible. Sports are a communal experience, and we need as many ideas and resources as possible to make this the success we know it can be.
