D&E Founders Day Awards

September 20, 2013
The Inter-Mountain
Davis & Elkins College celebrated Founders’ Day on Thursday with a convocation in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium and presentation of student achievement awards. Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Joe Roidt, second from right, congratulates recipients of the Freeman J. Daniels Academic Achievement Award, from left, Curtis Heishman, a sophomore from Montrose; Cacie Armstrong, a senior from Elkins; and Meredith Hill, right, a junior from Bridgeport. Gary Seth Thompson, a senior from Belington, was honored with the Newton Thomas Sr. Memorial Scholarship, but was unavailable for the ceremony. The Freeman J. Daniels Academic Achievement Award is presented to the highest ranking member of each class for the previous academic year. The award was established by friends of the late Freeman J. Daniels to honor the memory of one of the College's most distinguished alumni. Daniels graduated from Davis & Elkins College in 1922 and subsequently received his Master of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of Virginia. Davis & Elkins College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1963, and in 1976, he and his brother, the late attorney G. Neil Daniels, received the College's Founders' Award. The L. Newton Thomas Sr. Scholarship fund was established through a bequest from Mr. Thomas. The fund supports the L. Newton Thomas Scholars Program for outstanding students.
