IWLA invites festivalgoers to buckwheat feed

September 26, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

As you're walking through the streets during the Forest Festival, there are a few things that you just can't miss - like the smell of corn dogs, cotton candy, funnel cakes and all the other yummy festival foods. On Sunday, Oct. 6, come and enjoy the unique taste and smell of buckwheat cakes at the Izaak Walton League Clubhouse, located approximately 6 miles straight up Files Creek Road, in Beverly.

The Mountaineer Chapter has been serving these delicious sour cakes for years now and has also served many people from different states, who look forward to this unique meal. This yearly event has been well-organized by George Collett for many years, along with the help from members of the Mountaineer Chapter, who also arrive early in the morning to help out and make this one of the chapter's biggest fundraisers.

The cakes will be served from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a cost of $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Also, along with the buckwheat cakes, they will be serving pork sausage patties, from Campbell's Market, homemade sausage gravy made by Elinor Evans, drinks and regular pancakes.

Bruce and Elinor Evans grill up an order of cakes for one of the many people that attend the Buckwheat Feed.

Each year, the queen and some of her court arrive to taste the sour cakes and spend some time with our crowd of diners. The Randolph County 4-H teen leaders will help again with the serving of the tables and are a big help to make the day a success. At the end of the event, we will be drawing the winners from our raffle for a new four-wheeler. You may also purchase your ticket for the drawing at the feed. So, after you have enjoyed the Forest Festival events all week and you are just simply worn out, come up and let us grill you up some tasty cakes.
