PHILIPPI - James Pucci scored two goals to power Davis & Elkins College to a 2-1 victory over Alderson Broaddus University Sunday in G-MAC action at AB Stadium.

"It was a scrappy, hard-fought win," Senator coach Aron Bassoff said afterward. "We didn't make it easy on ourselves. We weren't too particularly happy with the way we played in the first half, but we went up by two goals and held them to none.

"I think we could have also done a better job in the second half, as well. But we'll take the victory and learn from it."

The Senators (4-3-1, 2-0 G-MAC) opened the scoring early in the game when Pucci took a perfectly placed pass from Wyatt Hill and drilled the back of the net at the 1:15 mark. Pucci added another goal on a penalty pick just before the half to make the score 2-0 at the break.

The Battlers (1-7, 0-1 G-MAC) answered in the second half when Jose Noriega scored on a penalty kick at 59:39.

However, the Senators' defense tightened up and goalie Cameron Rivera didn't give up another goal to make the final score, 2-1.

The Senators have won four straight games, but Bassoff says the team still needs to improve if it's going to make the NCAA tournament.

"We're looking to be a lot more consistent, as far as our effort and our play," Bassoff said. "We know we have to work harder to put ourselves in a position to possibly go to the NCAA tournament. It's going to take a lot more wins and a lot better play for us to do that."

D&E will next face Kentucky Wesleyan at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Elkins. ABU will also play at 5 p.m. Thursday, when Trevecca Nazarene University travels to Philippi.
