Upbeat show coming to Elkins

October 8, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

The Augusta Dance Pavilion on the campus of Davis & Elkins College will come to life with the original sounds of the Sweetback Sisters and special guest Honey Spin for a high-energy evening of dance and music on Friday, Oct. 11. A dance workshop begins at 7:30 p.m. and the dance follows at 8 p.m.

The event is presented by the Davis & Elkins College Appalachian Music & Dance/Augusta Club and Elkins Country Dance Society. Tickets are $10 at the door and free for Davis & Elkins College students, faculty and staff. For additional information, call the D&E box office at 304-637-1255 or visit the arts and entertainment section at www.dewv.edu. In the event of rain, an alternative location will be announced.

Honey Spine is comprised of Brian Chieco on banjo, ukulele and vocals, and Tim Martin on guitar and vocals. With tight melodic harmonies, they balance upbeat music with dark lyricism that speaks to human nature. The progressive folk duo will open the show.

The Sweetback Sisters will perform at the Augusta Dance Pavilion at D&E on Friday.

Sweetback Sisters Emily Miller on lead vocals, fiddle and guitar, and Zara Bode on lead vocals and guitar combine family-style harmonies that recall the best of country music from the Everlys to The Judds. The renegade retro band mixes country, swing and honky-tonk with the themes of heartbreak, revenge, remorse and staying strong in the face of relationships gone wrong.

The Sweetback's band features Rob Hecht on fiddle; Stefan Amidon on drums and bass vocals; Peter Bitnec on upright bass; and Ryan Hommel on electric guitar. Former band member Jesse Milnes will play electric guitar for the Oct. 11 show.

The Sweetback Sisters have been touring since they released "Chicken Ain't Chicken" in 2009. Their new CD, "Looking for a Fight," showcases the band's musicianship and complex arrangements.

Following their performance at D&E, the Sweetback Sisters will head out West for shows in Utah, Nevada and California.
