The Randolph County Board of Education heard a presentation about starting a volleyball program at Tygarts Valley Middle School during its Monday meeting.

Steve Wamsley, TVMS principal, addressed the board, saying that with 35 students signing up and showing interest - and with the proper facilities already available - the program would be a great addition to the institution and its students.

The BOE approved several personnel changes Monday, including the promotion of John Lawson from Elkins High School basketball coach to the schools' athletic director, effective March 3, 2014.

Superintendent Terry George said that in the event the basketball season is extended for the postseason, Lawson will take over whenever the basketball season concludes.

Also at Monday's meeting, Madison Collett, a student representative from Elkins High School-Randolph Technical Center, gave a presentation to the BOE regarding the accomplishments of the students at the center.

The Technical Center, which was named a 2013-2014 West Virginia School of Excellence, opened its doors in the 1976-1977 school year. Since then it has helped numerous students pursue professional, non-professional, technical or skilled careers.

It also houses many student organizations, including DECA (Association of Marketing Students), Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the Technology Student Association (TSA).

Collett said she has enjoyed her time at the school, and she encouraged more people in the community to be involved with the Technical Center.

Board member Harvey Taylor spoke toward the end of the meeting about the tragic fatal fire in Elkins last week. He thanked the local businesses and the school districts who have helped, whether through donating time, resources or funding, for their continued support for the family. He said that so far the total amount of money raised for the Chamberlain family is around $11,000.
