Wesleyan rallies for win over Battlers

BUCKHANNON - West Virginia Wesleyan overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat Alderson Broaddus, 86-73, Tuesday night at the Rockefeller Center.

In a battle of former West Virginia Conference rivals, the Battlers controlled the opening half behind the play of Natalie Smith, who fired in 17 points over the first 20 minutes of action. The red-shirt senior guard was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc on the night, hitting all five of her treys in the first half.

AB led by as many as 19 points after a jumper by Lorin Clark made it 40-21 with 6:05 remaining before the Bobcats went on a 17-9 to end the opening half.

The run carried over into the second frame for the hosts and a free throw from Allie Brown tied the game at 57. Lauren Graham followed with a trey to give Wesleyan the lead for good with 12:13 left.

The Battlers came no closer than six points inside the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Brittany Williams tallied 21 points for the Bobcats to lead all scorers in the game. Brown added 17, Kacey Johnson 14 and Kike DeVane 10.

Williams and DeVane also grabbed eight boards.

Smith finished with 19 points in a losing effort.

Rachel Ashley followed with 14 points and seven assists, and Korie Maryo 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Battlers committed 26 turnovers, compared to 12 for the home team.

Wesleyan (1-1) will travel to Fairmont?State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, while the AB (0-3) visits Virginia State on the same day at 4 p.m.
