BELINGTON - A Barbour County woman said she received a huge surprise recently and applauds a West Virginia State Office's honesty.
Wanda Mitchell of Belington said she looked through the latest issue of Unclaimed Property in The Inter-Mountain that is issued through the West Virginia State Treasurer's Office.
"I did not see my name listed, but the notes urge residents to call anyway," Mitchell said. "I called, and would you believe, I was told I did have something. So I filled out the form and sent it in to the office."
Mitchell said she had to have the form notarized - later, she received another form asking for her box number in 1978. She said she sent the information back to Charleston.
"On October 23, I received a check for $90.36," Mitchell said. "Can you believe after 35 years, I still received my money? This must be a record for honesty."
Mitchell said she is writing a thank you to the woman who helped her and also to State Treasurer John Perdue.
"Their honesty is appreciated," Mitchell said.
Mitchell said she hopes others call and check to see if they might have some unclaimed items belonging to them.
"Why not call 1-800-642-8687?" Mitchell said. "It's free and you might be surprised also."
