ELKINS - Wintry weather may cause a cancellation of the Elkins Christmas Parade today, officials said.
The Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce will announce the status of the parade today at noon. The decision will take into account how the weather will affect participants as well as spectators.
"There has been a lot of planning that has gone into making this parade happen but the one thing we can't control is the weather," Jess Arbogast, the ERCCC executive director, said. "Both the Chamber and the city of Elkins have received many phone calls wondering how the weather will affect the parade.
"We want to make the most logical and safe decision for those participating in the parade, the volunteers and the spectators. We will be making our decision around noon to allow adequate time to inform the community."
The visits and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and all events scheduled be held at the YMCA this evening will go on as scheduled, regardless of the weather conditions and parade status.
The Inter-Mountain will still provide a photographer to take photos with Santa. In order to cut down on wait times, one photo will be taken per family. No charge will be administered to receive a single printed image. Pictures will be available for pickup at the paper's office on Railroad Avenue in Elkins or may be mailed upon request. Photo CDs will also be available at a nominal fee.
"Regardless of the weather, the visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus will go on as scheduled. There will be many activities for the children to enjoy inside the YMCA while they wait their turn to meet Santa," Arbogast said.
