D&E women roll past G-MAC foe Scots; men fall

ELKINS - Davis & Elkins College placed four players in double figures in coasting to a 90-63 win over Ohio Valley University Thursday night in G-MAC action at the McDonnell Center.

MaQuasia Ferebee led the Senators (3-9, 2-0) with 14 points. Jorden Lykes and Stephanie Wooten added 13 each, and Ashley Bowles tallied 10.

The game was tied at 22-22 with 5:51 left in the first half before a pair of free throws from Ashley Magallenez started D&E on a 16-2 run, allowing the hosts to take a 38-24 advantage into the intermission.

The lead grew to as many as 28 points in the second half on Bowles' 3-pointer with 8:08 left in regulation that made it 68-40, and to 31 points (90-59) on Mary Jane Braham's layup at the 1:12 mark.

Imana Ward had 15 points, Saira House 14 and Shelby Way 13 for the Fighting Scots.

D&E, which was coming off an 86-72 exhibition loss at Marshall on Tuesday, held a 47-45 rebounding advantage and connected on 30 of 46 free-throw attempts. Ohio Valley also had 25 turnovers, compared to 15 by the Senators.

D&E will remain home at 2 p.m. Saturday to face Salem International for another league contest.

Ohio Valley (3-8, 0-3) will visit Alderson Broaddus at 5:15 p.m. on the same day.

In the men's game, Sequan Lawrence fired in 27 points as Ohio Valley held on for an 85-82 victory.

The Scots (2-10, 1-2) led 84-79 with 23 seconds left in regulation before Devin Miller's 3-pointer made it a two-point game with 12 seconds showing. D&E had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but Robert Smelser blocked Tivius Guthrie's shot to preserve the win.

Jerry Mason Jr. added 15 points, Povilias Dambrauskas 14 and Arturs Vitins 13 for the Scots.

Miller tossed in 22 points, followed by Kevin Bracy-Davis with 17 and Juwan Strothers with 15 for the Senators (7-5, 0-1).

Each team committed 13 turnovers in the contest, which was tied at 41-all at halftime.

D&E will host Salem International at 4 p.m. Saturday, while Ohio Valley will visit Alderson Broaddus at 7:30 p.m. on the same day.
