Military Advanced Education (MAE) has named Davis & Elkins College a Top Military-Friendly College in its just-released 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities. The guide is available online at www.mae-kmi.com.
The guide provides prospective students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to our men and women in uniform.
Attributes considered include flexibility of online learning options, extent of transfer credits accepted by degree level, on-campus ROTC, Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, on-campus active duty/veteran assistance, the support provided to the families of service members, faculty trained in veteran reintegration issues, presence on military installations, and full-time counselors trained in veteran-specific mental health concerns.
Kelly Fodel, MAE's editor, said, "Our staff used strict criteria to evaluate the submissions of the respondents, and we had a record number of schools participating this year. We believe the Guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising servicemembers about their educational opportunities."
She added, "We designed this database with the military student in mind. We want to help them make informed choices, so we are giving them access to all the survey questions and answers provided by the schools, as well as explanations about critical issues like the schools' activation and deployment policies, withdrawal policies, scholarship and financial aid information and important support information."
Davis & Elkins President Dr. Michael P. Mihalyo said, "We're very proud to be given this important distinction. However, I have to say we're not doing what we do for veterans for awards. We're doing it solely to support these men and women who have given so much to us.
"Of course awards such as these do provide affirmation that we're moving in the right direction in terms of our support," he said.
Military veterans are an important demographic at Davis & Elkins College. Services offered by the college include a veteran ID card, a beautifully restored Veterans Lounge in historic Halliehurst, and the Veterans Upward Bound program. The College is also home to a local chapter of the Student Veterans Association.
