Do you love your heart? Heart disease is the number one killer of West Virginia women, and physical inactivity is one of several major risk factors. By being moderately active for a total of two hours and 30 minutes each week, the risk of heart disease can be decreased.
To help jumpstart your physical activity routine, the Elkins YMCA is hosting a six-week walking challenge in conjunction with the WVU Extension Service's Love Your Heart Movement. The program, open to all, specifically targets adult women.
The challenge will begin Feb. 3 and end March 17. Participants will be asked to log their miles at least once a week and will have free access to the YMCA during the six-week challenge.
A kick-off will be hosted at the YMCA at noon Feb. 3. The first 50 women who sign up for the challenge at the event will receive a free water bottle and pedometer. All participants who complete the six week challenge will be entered into a drawing to win a "heart healthy" prize basket including a $25 gift card, stretch bands, a walking DVD and a cookbook.
