MILL CREEK - An eighth grade member of the Tygarts Valley High School Band has been tapped for an honor. Erik Winans, 14, has was nominated to the West Virginia University All State Honors Band in
Winans, who has played trumpet for four years, was surprised by the nomination.
"I did not know I was going to be asked to join the honors band," he said. "It was an exciting opportunity."
This is not the first music honor Winans has received. He was also named as the most dedicated band member and the most willing to learn.
The Honor Band performance was on Feb. 15. Rehearsals were on the Feb.13-14.
Winans' brother, Dylan, was also selected to play with the All State Honors Band this year.
Winans said he would not have came as far as he has if it were not for his band director Josh Tharp.
"He and my parents push me to be the best I can," Winans said. "Mr. Tharp has really worked with me this year as and does a spectacular job."
Winans plans to continuing his music education. He said he hasn't thought about college yet. Erik is very active with the Tygarts Valley Football team as well.
"I am going to continue playing the trumpet because it is fun," Winans said. "I like the way I feel when I play music. It takes a lot of time and energy, but in the long run it's worth the sacrifice."
