PETERSBURG - Tyler Smith nailed a 3-pointer as time expired in overtime to lift Moorefield over Pendleton, 60-59, in the Region II, Section 2 championship Saturday night at Petersburg High School.
The Yellow Jackets will host Tucker County at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a regional final, while the Wildcats will visit Notre Dame in the other finale.
"It was a great high school basketball game," Moorefield coach Pat McGregor said. "I'm very proud of our kids.
"They fought hard the whole game. Never at any time did they believe that they could lose the game. It was our time, I guess."
Both teams battled back and forth the entire contest. The score was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter. However, Moorefield mounted a small lead in the second quarter to take a 28-19 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Pendleton stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Yellow Jackets, 17-9, to make it a one point contest. A nearly even fourth quarter brought the score to 48-48 at the end of regulation.
The Wildcats jumped out to a five-point lead in over time, but Moorefield continued to battle back. With four seconds left in OT, Pendleton's Luke Cooper missed the second of two free throws. The Yellow Jackets got the rebound and kicked it out to Smith, who got off a 3-point jumper to seal the win as time expired.
"Tyler (Smith) had a great game," McGregor said. "He played all 36 minutes. It was the best all around game I've seen from a point guard. He was really focused and played a nice game."
Smith finished the game with 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Austin Williams chipped in 14 points and Aaron Cole added 11 points.
For Pendleton County, Evan Arrington led all scorers with 20 points. Cody Lambert added 12 points.
