ELKINS - Colby Gainer struck out six batters Monday to lift Elkins over Buckhannon-Upshur, 8-3, in Big 10 Conference action.
"It was good to come back home from a long road trip and pick up a conference win," EHS coach Adam Roth said. "Colby fought through a rough first inning. Once he settled in, he pitched a good game. The middle of our line-up has been hitting well. That really drives our run production. We've also been getting some contributions from the top and the bottom of the lineup. That really helps."
The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth inning to break the game open. Cole Harlan ignited the rally with a two-run double.
Gainer pitched the complete game to earn the victory. He gave up one earned run on four hits. At the plate, he was 1 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Junior Robert Shreve picked up the loss. He pitched five innings, giving up seven runs on six hits.
He struck out three and walked three.
Logan Phillips paced the Tigers offense, going 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Harlan went 1 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Bryson Fluke, Branden Newcome and Zach Gifford scored the runs for B-U. Fluke was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Gifford went 1 for 3 with a double.
