Elkins High’s Alyssa Harper prepares to release a pitch against Hampshire Wednesday in sectional action at Elkins Middle School Field. Harper was the winning pitcher in both games of a doubleheader as the Tigers claimed the sectional title.
It was the second straight sectional title for Elkins, following last year's first-ever banner in softball.
"Our defense was big for us today," Tigers first-year coach Ashley Cameron said. "We only had two errors in 13 innings, and this was two great wins for us."
Harper, a sophomore, allowed six hits in the opener, while fanning six.
She worked out of a jam in the first inning when the Trojans' leadoff hitter doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. But Harper struck out the next batter and got a fly out to end the threat.
The Tigers, coming off Tuesday's 1-0 setback at Romney, gave Harper all the run support she would need in the bottom of the frame when Jordan Hart singled and raced home on Haley Collett's inside-the-park homer.
Hart, who was 3 for 3, added a triple and an RBI, while Collett finished 2 for 3 with a double and Katy Reed went 2 for 2.
