The subject of gun control is once again in the national news.
Last month, former New York City mayor and multibillionaire Michael Bloomberg announced plans to support the gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety. Bloomberg says he'll be putting at least $50 million of his own money to support this organization and its cause.
Last week, the American Academy of Pediatrics announced they are ready to meet the National Rifle Association head on in a political battle on the issue. The AAP, which has a membership of more than 62,000, has long been an outspoken voice on the issue of gun control.
In 1992, the AAP not only supported an outright ban on assault rifles, but a total ban on the ownership or possession of all handguns. Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in December 2012, the AAP has stepped up their attempts to educate parents about having guns in the home, especially around children.
Most of these liberal-minded groups and individuals seem to think Americans have too much freedom.
For example, if a person goes out on a Friday night, has too much to drink, drives a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and kills someone in a car wreck, the bartender or alcoholic beverage manufacturer is at fault.
If the person robs a bank or store and kills someone while committing this crime, the gun dealer or manufacturer is at fault.
If a man beats up his wife or children, his bad childhood is to blame. If lawless mobs burn, loot and destroy nearly one-fourth of a large city, then society itself is to blame.
This is when these liberal-minded people scream, "Americans have too much freedom."
These same liberals always are yelling, "Americans have too many guns in their homes, the way their guns are stored is wrong, the way a certain gun looks is wrong, the way a certain gun functions or works is wrong, the magazine capacity is wrong, sport hunting is wrong and the latest United States Supreme Court interpretation of the Second Amendment to the Constitution is wrong. Americans have too much freedom."
What it really amounts to, criminals have too much freedom.
