Joann Arbogast, 71, departed this life Monday, Feb. 10, 2014. She had been residing with her daughter in Winchester, Va., but was previously a resident of the Elkins area.
Born in Elkins, Aug. 12, 1942, she was the daughter of Benjamin F. Hamrick and Versie V. Lewis Liedy.
She attended Randolph County Schools in West Virginia. Joann was the 13th of 14 children. Along with her parents, preceding her in death were three brothers, Raymond Dilly, Virgil Liedy and Buddy Lee Hamrick; and four sisters, Pauline Knavenshu, Roena Pierce, Sally Vanscoy and Betty Bell.
Surviving siblings include Ada Bell of Pikesville, Md., Mary Jane Walter of Hanover, Pa., Nellie Hamrick of Salem, Ohio, George Hamrick of Davis, Ginger Hamrick of West Virginia, and Delmar Liedy of Elkins. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews
Joann was married, July 1, 1960, to James Arbogast. They were married 37 years and remained life-long friends.
Joann was the mother of four children, Dennis Arbogast and wife, Deanna, of Austin, Texas, Lillie Riggs and husband, Ronnie, of Winchester, Va., Wesley Arbogast and fiancee, Donna, of Belington and Michele Ballard and husband, Justin, of Farmington, Ariz. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Roxann Row-Sponaugle and husband, Jeremie, Jason Arbogast and wife, Zhanna, Joshua Arbogast and wife, Erin, Chelsea Garcia and husband, Cody, Kelsey Ballard, Kira Ballard, Jacob Ballard, Tristan Arbogast and Riley Riggs; and eight great-grandchildren, Austin, Annaliese, Aidan, Annika, Avery, Alijah, Kaiya and Dominque.
Joann enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, camping, berry picking, fishing and ginsenging. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, listening to bluegrass music and spending time with her family. Joann was a loving, soft-spoken woman who always had kind words for those around her. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Cremation services were entrusted to Phelps Funeral Home, Winchester, Va. In lieu of flowers or monetary gifts, donations can be made to your local Humane Society, as Joann was an animal lover.
A memorial will be conducted at 3 p.m. June 21 at Rivers of Living Water Ministries in Elkins.
