MARINETTE, Wis. - The Elkins 15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars arrived in Wisconsin on Wednesday for the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament and manager Jack Crumm says the team is ready for action.
Elkins will face Schererville, Ind., at 4:30 p.m. EST today.
"The kids are all in good spirits," Crumm said. "It was a long drive and we took two days to do it. We had practice this morning and they put us on a field in Michigan, near the lake. It was very nice. The boys are motivated and ready to play."
According to Crumm, Schererville is an experienced team and will present a challenge for Elkins.
"We know Schererville is one of the better teams in the tournament," Crumm said. "We're ready to see what happens. The guys are all looking forward to playing ball."
Opening ceremonies were hosted Wednesday evening. Crumm said player Blake "Food" Loftis participated in a cheese-eating contest. However, he didn't win.
"The kids are having a lot of fun," Crumm said. "We thought for sure Blake would win the cheese-eating contest, but it was timed. If it was determined by who could eat the most, we're sure he would have had it."
On Friday, Elkins will play Lawrence County, Ill., at 11:30 a.m. and Zanesville, Ohio, at 3 p.m. EST
Following pool play, the teams will be ranked and compete in a single-elimination tournament to determine who goes on to compete in the Babe Ruth World Series.
Members of the 15-year-old All-Stars include Loftis, Will Crumm, Cory Gillespie, Greyson Teets, Caleb Riggleman, Adam Riggleman, Daniel Hamrick, Rece Wamsley, Ben Huffman, Shane Bodkin, David Gainer, Kyle Riggleman and Matt Wilson. Ron Huffman and Daniel Hamrick are the assistant coaches.
