VIENNA - The Davis & Elkins women's basketball squad faced Ohio Valley in a back-and-forth affair on Thursday, but the Senators were able to pull out a 70-61 victory over the Scots.
The Senators started the game fast and jumped out to a 9-point lead midway through the first quarter. The Scots got the lead down to just 3 points with a minute left in the quarter but the Senators went on a quick 6-2 run in the last minute to hold a 22-15 lead at the end of the first.
Ohio Valley struggled to get much going on the offensive end late in the second quarter, and Davis & Elkins began to take over the game. A 9-0 run by the Senators to close out the half allowed them to take a 40-25 lead to the locker room.
In the third quarter, OVU turned up their defensive intensity, allowing just 9 points all quarter, and cut the Senator lead down to 49-44. As the fourth quarter began the Senators went on an 11-0 run and started to pull away.
The Scots were able to crawl their way back into the game, cutting the lead down to just 3 points with two minutes to play. However, Davis & Elkins had answers for every Fighting Scot point down the stretch and came away with a 70-61 win.
D&E's Stephanie Wooten had 15 points and 4 assists, while Kali Wilburn scored 14 and grabbed 11 rebounds. D&E shot 43 percent from the floor, although they hit just 3 of 17 three-pointers.
OVU's Shicole Watts led all scorers with 29 points and 9 rebounds. Faith Miller added 12 points and Charday Pitts added 10 points for Ohio Valley.
D&E is now 7-8, including 3-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Senators had been scheduled to play at Salem International on Saturday, but that game has been postponed due to the weather forecast.
The Scots fall to 3-13 overall and 1-3 in the G-MAC. Saturday's game with Alderson Broaddus has been postponed due to threat of inclement weather so OVU will not take the floor again until Thursday when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., for a game with Trevecca Nazarene.
VIENNA - The Davis & Elkins men's basketball team lost a hard-fought game to Ohio Valley Thursday, 85-76.
Kevin Simpson led the Senators with 19 points. Jordan McElveen had 15 points for D&E, while Alex Vasiljevic added 12 and Rickenjee Bellevue pitched in 11.
D&E shot 50 percent from the field and a very respectable 42 percent from the three-point line.
OVU's Markese Allen led all scorers with 31 points, while Darryl Walker added 15 and David Sinickas had 12.
D&E falls to 6-12, and 1-4 in the G-MAC. Ohio Valley is now 4-12, and 2-2 in conference play.
The Senators were set to play Salem International on Saturday, but weather has caused a postponement. D&E will next take to the floor on Jan. 28 at Cedarville.
