Bulldogs slay Dragons

MILL?CREEK – Tygarts Valley sank nine 3-pointers to earn a 65-47 victory over Cameron Friday night in opening round play of the West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament.

The senior duo of Adam Cassell and Brett Griffith combined for seven of the Bulldogs’ treys on the night. Cassell finished with 21 points, five assists and three steals, while Griffith had 20 points, including four 3-pointers.

“We shot the ball well tonight,” Tygarts Valley coach Tom Wamsley said. “Cameron went to a box-and-one (defense) on Brett in the third quarter and it opened up things from the outside for Cassell.”

Cassell drilled three shots from beyond the arc in the third quarter as the Bulldogs turned a 28-23 halftime lead into a 45-28 advantage entering the final frame.

Derrick Villarico added five assists for the Bulldogs, who upped their record to 8-2.

Mark Walker finished with 13 points and Zach Hall chipped in 10 for the Dragons, who led 13-12 after one quarter.

Tygarts Valley will entertain Harman at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a Potomac Valley Conference contest.

The Bulldogs will resume WVHIT action next Saturday.
