Bulldogs stay perfect
MILL?CREEK?- Class A, No. 10 Tygarts Valley stayed perfect on the season with a 58-48 win over Potomac Valley Conference foe Pocahontas County on Tuesday night.
Needing only eleven points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career, Brandon Pritt wasted little time accomplishing the milestone. Pritt scored the Bulldogs’ first 12 points and got his 11th point after he corralled an offensive rebound and got the putback with 1:46 left in the first stanza.
Behind a couple forced turnovers and a pair of threes from Brett Griffith, the Bulldogs went into the locker room with a comfortable 33-20 lead.
The Warriors would not go away, however, as they came out aggressively to start the second half. Cary Robertson tallied six straight points, and Tyler Davis connected on a long-range shot to cut the Bulldog lead to 35-29 with three minutes left in the quarter. Tygarts Valley would erase that run as Adam Cassell came away with two consecutive steals for scores and the home team pushed the lead back up to 41-31 at the end of the third.
Pocahontas County continued to chip away at the lead late in the fourth as Davis connected on a pair of treys. However, the deficit was too much to overcome, and Pritt sealed the game by going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute.
“It was nice to come out with a win against a good opponent even though we didnt play well,” Tygarts Valley coach Tom Wamsley said. “I was pleased with our guys for keeping their heads and not getting rattled when the game got close.”
Pritt led all scorers with 24 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds to record the double-double.
Griffith followed with 17 points and Cassell contributed 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals for the victors.
Davis led the Warriors (1-6, 0-2 PVC) with 15 points and Robertson followed with 13. The Warriors will visit East Hardy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Tygarts Valley (6-0, 2-0) will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when it travels to No. 3 Tucker County for a key conference match.
