EMS boys split games with Robert L. Bland

The Elkins Middle School boys basketball team split a pair of games from Robert L. Bland on Friday night.

Robert L. Bland won the varsity contest, 35-19.

Thomas Hogan had 13 points to lead the Patriots.

Matt Wilson and Curtis Bullock had four points each for the Hornets (6-4).

Elkins (6-3) won the junior varsity contest, 38-26.

Elliot White and Zach Shreve had eight points each EMS.

Mason Kelly added six points for the Hornets.

Shawn Moran had 12 points, while Cody Seelback had eight points for the Patriots.

Elkins will travel to Tucker Valley at 6 p.m. on Monday.

EMS JV team wins

WESTON – The Elkins Middle School girls basketball team split a pair of games with Robert L. Bland Friday night.

Robert L. Bland won the varsity contest, 34-27.

Alexis Rumbuch had 17 points, while Devin Woody added 12 points for the Lady Patriots.

Sierra Poling had eight points and nine rebounds, while Haley Collett added six points, four assists and four rebounds for the Lady Hornets.

Elkins won the junior varsity contest, 28-21.

Taylor Phillips had 11 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Kaci Zopp added eight points for the Lady Hornets.

Bella Posey had eight points for Robert L. Bland.

Elkins will entertain Tucker Valley at 6 p.m. on Monday.

College swimming

Wesleyan defeats D&E

BUCKHANNON – West Virginia Wesleyan defeated Davis & Elkins Friday night in collegiate swimming action.

The Bobcats won with a total tally of 257-43. This included an 88-35 decision on the women’s side and a 169-8 win on the men’s side.

“Tonight we swam well.” Wesleyan coach April Staniszewski said. “After coming off our winter training trip in Tampa (Florida), I am pleased with the effort given by the team.

“We have been training hard that has resulted in being sore and some even fighting off viruses. The team came together tonight and made our last home meet of the season a great one for our graduating seniors.”

Wesleyan won both relays on each side. The 400-free relay consisted of Rachael Kelley, Vivian Minkemeyer, Rachael Bailer and Ellen Denton for the women, and Mark Mattis, Max Garner, Rodrigo Saldanha and Inti Freitas for the men.

The women’s 200-free relay included Becca Vaughan, Emma Sorsaia, Kim Stephens and Denton, while the men’s winning unit included Phil Fisher, Thomas Bartleman, Brian Wheeler and Mattis.

Individually, several Bobcats brought home victories – Mattis (200 free), Soldanha (1000-free), Freitas (200-IM and 100-back), Bartleman (50-free), Brandon Atkins (100-fly), Fisher (100-free, 100-breast) and Shaun Greer (500-free).

For D&E, Melissa Pusanik was a double-winner in the distance events, taking the 1,000 and 500-freestyle races. Kayla Huckaby added a win in the 200-free.
