Minutemaids pull past B-U
TENNERTON – Lewis County’s young squad continued its growing process Wednesday night, earning their second consecutive victory with a 46-33 decision over Buckhannon-Upshur in Big 10 Conference play.
“Getting that first win was a big step for us,” Minutemaid coach Tarra Sherrard said. “We have been playing and practicing well as a team, and tonight we came out with a lot of energy.”
The game was tied at 7-7 after one quarter before the Minutemaids moved to a 19-15 lead at the half and a 30-20 edge by the end of the third quarter. Utilizing defensive pressure and baskets in transition, the lead built to as high as 17 at 37-20 early in the fourth quarter.
“We start two freshmen and dress six I can’t imagine there is another team as young as we are,” Sherrard said. “We knew it was going to take a little time for things to fall into place, but they are improving and we are seeing a lot of positives.”
Freshman Brooklyn Perkey led all scorers with 16 points, five assists and five steals for Lewis County (2-8). Karli Hamrick scored 15 points, with Danielle James scoring nine points and collecting a game-high 12 rebounds. Braley Bozic added three blocked shots.
Kelsey Hinzman led the Lady Bucs with a double-double, tallying 13 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Jess Feronti scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.
B-U falls to 1-11 and will host Fairmont Senior at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Minutemaids will entertain Robert C. Byrd on the same evening.
