Senior pulls past Colts

PHILIPPI – Class AA, No. 8 Fairmont Senior closed the game on a 9-0 run to get past a determined Philip Barbour squad 68-57 Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action.

The Colts trailed 59-57 after Antonio Dalton’s basket with 3 minutes left in regulation. But they didn’t score again as the Polar Bears pulled away down the stretch. A key 3-pointer by Jarin Hilson gave Senior some breathing room at 64-57 with 1:30 left. Hilson later added a pair of free throws, followed by a layup by Travon Horton to give the Polar Bears their biggest lead of the night at game’s end.

Horton finished with 18 points to pace the winners. Hilson added 16, Shaquille Washington 14 and DeVante Waites 13.

Chance Price fired in 20 points, and his scoring in the second quarter allowed the Colts to erase a 17-12 first-quarter deficit.

The senior guard had 14 of his game-high total in the second, including three 3-pointers, as Philip Barbour took a 34-27 lead into intermission.

But Fairmont Senior (9-3, 7-1 Big 10) quickly tied the game on a 7-0 run to start the third, and eventually built a 50-47 advantage on Washington’s putback at the third-quarter buzzer.

Quentin Mouser added 16 points and Dalton, a 6-foot-7 center, 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Colts, who dropped to 5-6 overall and 4-5.

Philip Barbour will return to action at East Fairmont at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a league contest, while the Polar Bears visit Lincoln on the same evening.

Tucker County 78

Moorefield …… 61

HAMBLETON – Tyler Snyder fired in 27 points and dished out 11 assists to lead Class A, No. 4 Tucker County past Moorefield 78-61 Thursday night in Potomac Valley Conference play.

The Mountain Lions, winners of 10 straight games, trailed 38-36 at the intermission before outscoring the Yellow Jackets 19-4 in the decisive third quarter.

Ian Nichols added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Tucker County.

Jared Kite had 14 points, Lance Taylor 10 and Adam Snyder 11 for Moorefield.

Tucker County (10-1) will host Petersburg at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, while the Yellow Jackets (5-6) will entertain Pendleton County on the same evening.

Preston 63, Elkins 45

KINGWOOD – Preston outscored Elkins 17-6 in the third quarter to break open a close game en route to a 63-45 win Thursday night in Big 10 action.

The Knights (9-2, 6-0 Big 10), who held a slim 30-27 halftime lead, were led by Jimmy Galusky’s 23 points. Mitchell Koch added 13 and Spencer Lively 10.

Brandon Roth and Braden Hammond had 12 points each for the Tigers (8-3, 4-3).

Elkins will host Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for another league contest.
