Wesleyan, D&E men fall

BUCKHANNON – West Virginia Wesleyan’s men connected for a school-record 17 three-pointers Saturday afternoon, but came up three points short to the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals, 77-74.

Coach Patrick Beilein’s Bobcats were a sterling 45.9 percent from long range (17 of 37), but they were matched by Wheeling Jesuit’s overall field-goal sharpshooting as the Cardinals hit on 59.4 percent of their shots.

Wheeling led early, jumping out to a 26-13 lead, but Wesleyan utilized its hot hand to control the tempo over the next 20 minutes of action.

They Bobcats rallied to cut the deficit to 43-39 at the half, and continued the momentum with a 20-6 surge to start the second half that produced a 59-49 lead.

Wheeling (8-7, 5-6 WVC) responded from that point as the Cardinals regained the lead and held on in the final minutes.

The winners were led on the day by Ben Seifert’s 23 points and 13 from Joe Prati.

Noah Cottrill led a trio of Bobcats (8-7, 5-6) that accounted for 16 of the 3-pointers, and 59 of the team’s points. Cottrill hit 7-of-12 on threes and ended the game with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Soren Dossing connected on five bombs and tallied 19 points, with T.J. Thompson hitting four treys and closed with 15 points.

Wesleyan will travel to Davis & Elkins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Urbana 74, Davis & Elkins 65

URBANA, Ohio Davis & Elkins was unable to post a victory at Urbana, falling by a 74-65 score Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Devin Miller scored a game-best 17 points for the Senators, while Shane Brown scored 10 points.

D&E will visit Alderson-Broaddus at 7:30 p.m. today for a WVC contest.

A-B 73, Bluefield State 68

PHILIPPI Alderson-Broaddus fought back from a six-point second-half deficit to defeat Bluefield State 73-68 Saturday in WVIAC action.

The Battlers were paced by O’Dell Eargle’s 13-point, 11-rebound performance. Casey Ainslie added 12 points while Malcolm Tatum totaled 11.

A-B will host WVC rival Davis &?Elkins College at 7:30 p.m. today.

Women’s game

A-B 53, Bluefield State 31

PHILIPPI Alderson-Broaddus held Bluefield State to a season-low point total en route to a 53-31 victory over the Lady Blues Saturday in West Virginia Conference action.

Erica Brooks led the victors with a game-high 12 points, with all 12 coming from behind the three-point line. Shirshawna Dowdy and Leah Hurst netted 10 points apiece while Amanda Peoples narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Battlers will entertain Davis &?Elkins at 5:30 p.m. today.
