B-U cruises past Lady Colts

PHILIPPI – After adapting to a new coach and battling the injury bug, Buckhannon-Upshur appears to be playing its best basketball of the season at the right time.

With postseason play on the horizon, the Lady Bucs, who snapped an 11-game losing skid earlier this season, have now won three of their last five games after cruising to a 52-30 Big 10 Conference win on senior night at Philip Barbour.

B-U held a slim 22-19 lead at intermission before taking charge in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Colts, 14-5.

A 3-pointer from Jessica Feronti with 2:01 left in the canto allowed B-U to open up a 34-22 advantage.

The lead quickly swelled to 39-24 in the fourth quarter on a basket by Kelsey Hinzman, followed by a free throw from Feronti.

Philip Barbour never came closer than 13 points the remainder of the night, as the Lady Bucs closed the game on a 13-6 run to take their largest lead at the final horn.

Megan Wilfong, a 5-11 sophomore center, tossed in 15 points – including eight in the second quarter – to pace B-U. She also grabbed 12 rebounds on the night. Feronti added 14 points and five assists.

Lindsay Riley, one of three Lady Colt seniors honored, tallied 14 points, while fellow senior Kaitlynn Neville added 12 points and the third senior, Marissa Carey, finished with two points.

B-U, which improved to 4-14 and 4-9 in Big 10 Conference play, will return to action Friday at Elkins for another league game.

Philip Barbour dropped to 3-8 and 3-10 and is scheduled to visit Liberty on Saturday for a conference contest.
