B-U leads area with 7 qualifiers
HUNTINGTON – Several area wrestlers will take part in the state meet that begins today at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
Buckhannon-Upshur leads the list of area qualifiers as the Bucs will send a total of seven grapplers to the three-day competition, which ends with Saturday’s championship round.
Lewis County, meanwhile, has six qualifiers, and Philip Barbour three in the Class AA-A competition.
The Bucs’ Daniel Nolte (32-5) was the regional champion and will face Preston’s Shane Catlett (23-8) in his first match in the 220-pound weight class.
Teammate Dakota Linger (126) also captured first in regional competition and will battle Brooke’s Chance Pattison in his opening match. Linger, a junior, is 36-5 on the season.
Other B-U qualifiers include Brandon Tenney (106), Ethan Hull (113), Tyler Demastes (120), Matt Fair (132) and Seth Cutright (152). Tenney, Hull and Cutright all finished as runner-ups in the regionals.
Cutright is a two-time All-State wrestler, finishing second last year. He finished fourth in the 2011 championships.
The Minutemen have two regional champs – Ryan Carson (51-6) at 182 and Kyle Rogers (55-4) at 170.
Also competing for Lewis County will be Corey Thompson (106), Caleb Howell (120), Anthony Ratliff (138) and Mason Arbogast (195).
Representing Philip Barbour will be Ian Nuzum (113), James Bell (160) and Travis Pomp (195).
Nuzum (33-13) was the regional runner-up.
Parkersburg South has won the last four Class AAA titles, while Point Pleasant has been the victor the past three years in Class AA-A.
