End of an era for historic league

An end of an era will occur today as the West Virginia Conference concludes the regular season in basketball.

The historic league will disband after this sports season with several current members forming the new Mountain East Conference.

Area schools such as Davis &?Elkins and Wesleyan have participated in the historic WVC since 1924, while Alderson-Broaddus became a member in 1932.

D&E and A-B will join the G-MAC on July 1, while Wesleyan is headed to the Mountain East Conference, along with current WVC members Charleston, Concord, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Shepherd, West Liberty, West Virginia State and Wheeling Jesuit.

Notre Dame (Ohio), Urbana, Virginia-Wise also will join the MEC, which officially earned Division II status this week after approval from the NCAA.

The WVC’s newest members – Pitt-Johnstown and Seton Hill – will become members of the PSAC next season, while Bluefield State will compete as an independent and Ohio Valley in the G-MAC.

The WVC’s swan song in basketball will be the annual tournament at the Charleston Civic Center, which will be held next week.

Today’s final matchups include D&E at Wesleyan, Seton Hall at Pitt-Johnstown, Ohio Valley at Fairmont State, Wheeling Jesuit at West Liberty, Alderson-Broaddus at Glenville State, Bluefield at Concord and Charleston at West Virginia State.
